and what the hell was the Comet Lodge? Was that like the Masons or something, back in the day?

Yep. It's a Masonic affliation. The Comet Lodge Cemetery was originally the Pioneer Cemetery before it was abandoned the first time. It was taken over and maintained by the Masons for awhile before it was lost and abandoned again...and then bulldozed for a housing development.
